This is a Colt Model 1851 Navy .36 Caliber Revolver produced in 1858 by Colt in Hartford, Ct. It includes its original flap holster. The '51 Navy was a mainstay of Colt's production, being produced until 1873. Thousands were carried during the Civil War and then later into the American West. Wild Bill Hickok carried a pair of these, butt forward, until his death in 1876 at Deadwood, South Dakota. This one is in very good condition. It is all matching, including the wedge. There is no finish left on the steel portions of the revolver. These parts have a silvery pewter patina. This is a brass mounted revolver. The brass trigger and back strap were silver plated and traces of this finish remain. The mechanics of this pistol are excellent and the barrel tight to the frame. The bore is very good. There is some light pitting, but the rifling is strong throughout its length. There are a couple of small dents on the cylinder at the front, 180 degrees apart. It looks as though it was slightly squeezed in a vise. They are minor and do not obstruct the working of the cylinder at all. Most of the engraved naval battle on the cylinder is still visible. The small retaining screw for the wedge has been broken off and the loading lever screw does not extend all the way through the barrel. The grips are complete. There are a few small dings from use and a couple of worn areas on the left grip. The original leather flap holster is complete except for the very tip of the closure strap. There is some flaking of the surface finish, particularly at the hinge point of the flap. This is a nice pre-war '51 Navy Colt.
