FINE, ORIGINAL, ENGLISH CIVIL WAR CAVALRYMAN'S LOBSTER TAIL HELMET, CA. 1630-40

This is an original, iron, "Lobster Tail" helmet, dating from the English Civil War era. It is a cavalryman's helmet, the long tail, ear flaps, and nose piece designed to protect the wearer from sword cuts. The English Civil War was a series of conflicts fought between 1642 and 1651. Known as a "Zischagge" and probably of German origin, these helmets were imported into England in large numbers during the Civil Wars. The helmet is made of hammered sheet iron, with the various sections riveted together. The hinged sections are connected with leather. There is a heavy forged iron nose bar that can be raised or lowered by loosening a thumb screw. There is no liner. Most were worn with quilted caps. All the iron pieces appear to be original to the helmet. The leather hinges are quite old, but probably not 400 years old! The helmet has a dappled brown patina and overall is in fine condition. It displays beautifully and would enhance any collection.
