Item :	1853 DATED, HARPER'S FERRY U.S. MODEL 1841 "MISSISSIPPI" RIFLE

This is an original, U.S. Model 1841 Rifle manufactured at Harper's Ferry in 1853. These are known as "Mississippi" rifles, based on their use by Jefferson Davis' Mississippi troops in the Mexican War. They were an excellent design and saw widespread use throughout the Civil War. In later years, emigrants on the Oregon Trail could purchase a Mississippi rifle for use on the arduous journey. These are often referred to as Jaegers in contemporary accounts. This rifle is a Civil War New Jersey socket bayonet conversion. Mississippi rifles were not originally fitted for bayonets. New Jersey turned the barrels on their rifles down, moved the front sight, and added a lug so that a socket bayonet could be affixed. Originally .54 caliber, New Jersey re-bored them to .58 caliber to accept the standard minie bullet. This rifle is in very good condition. The Barrel and lock have a pewter patina. There are some lightly pitted areas on the barrel. The brass was cleaned at an earlier time and is redeveloping a bronze patina. The mechanics are excellent and the bore very good. There are some pits, but strong rifling visible throughout. The stock is very good, with the usual dings and scratches from use. Harper's Ferry rifles usually had inspector's marks in the patchbox, but there are no visible markings on this rifle. The U.S. Model 1841 has a long and storied history. Stock no. 20783
