SCARCE, U.S. MODEL 1884 TYPE 1 CADET TRAPDOOR RIFLE
Description :
Here is an original, U.S. Model 1884 Cadet Rifle chambered for the .45-70 government cartridge. This is a Type 1 cadet rifle with a two piece carbine trigger guard and no sling swivels. They were only fitted with a stacking swivel, which is missing on this rifle. The barrel length is 29 1/2", over 3" shorter than the standard rifle. Only about 2,000 of the Type 1 cadet rifles were produced, all in 1888. This rifle is in very good condition. It has an overall mottled dark brown patina, with no original finish remaining. The bore is good with a few light pits, but visible rifling along its length. The mechanics work well. The butt plate has an odd light gray patina and has had some work done at the heel. There are file and hammer marks present. The stock is good, with the usual dings and scratches from years of use. There is a faint remnant of the cartouche on the left side of the stock. The rear sight is the Buffington carbine sight marked with a "C". This is a scarce gun, but the condition is such that you would not mind taking it to the range. It would probably shoot pretty well. Stock no. 20737
