Item No.: 7976 Price : SOLD
Item : ARSENAL PERCUSSION CONVERSION OF U.S. MODEL 1817 COMMON RIFLE
Description :
This is an original U.S. Model 1817 Rifle manufactured by Henry Deringer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1844. Known as the "Common" rifle to differentiate it from the Hall breech loading rifle being produced in the same time period, the M1817 was a .54 caliber flintlock. Large numbers of these rifles were converted to percussion ignition for use during the Civil War. This rifle is an arsenal, "cone in barrel" percussion conversion. The rifle is in very good to fine condition. The barrel has been coated with a laquered brown finish that is almost blue. Much of the finish remains on the barrel, but there is some pitting around the percussion cone. There is about 50% of this finish on the barrel bands and nose cap. The patch box has a lacquer brown color. The lock and butt plate have developed a smooth brown patina. This gun has been smooth bored to about .58 caliber. The bore is dark, but mostly smooth. The stock is in fine condition with the cartouches faintly visible on the left flat of the stock. There are some small dings and scratches from use. There is a hairline crack extending from the front sideplate screw up to the barrel. This is an arm that was used in large numbers during the Civil War. Many saw later use, smooth bored for use on the frontier as hunting arms. Stock no. 20996
