Description :
|
This is an English Officer's Small Sword dating to the period of the French and Indian War, ca. 1760-1770. It is a beautiful, silver mounted sword with a 31" Colichemarde style blade. The Colichemarde sword replaced the classic rapier. It had a wide forte with multiple fullers and was better suited to parrying than the earlier designs. The Colichemarde was designed for dueling and served well in that capacity. It was also quite popular with Officers of the French and Indian War. George Washington received a sword of this style as an inauguration gift. This particular sword is distinguished by its exquisite filigree work on the guard and pommel. Most swords of this time had solid silver mountings. This sword has hundreds of tiny piercings, creating a delicate mesh that is truly a work of art. The sword is in very fine condition. The blade has a mottled brown and pewter patina. The hilt and guard are very fine. The guard has just a bit of movement, where it has loosened slightly over the years. This is a superb 18th century sword. Stock no. 21033
