This is a Civil War, U.S. Model 1861 .58 caliber Rifle Musket produced at Springfield Armory in 1862. The Model 1861 was the standard U.S. Musket of the Civil War. Springfield only made the Model 1861 for two years, switching production to the Model 1863 rifle musket in 1863. Production of the Model 1861 by contractors continued right through the end of the war. It served from the opening shots to the surrender at Appomattox. Over 1,000,000 were produced. This musket is in fine condition. The metal is mostly bright with a light speckling of brown patina. The musket has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The bore has a few tiny pits, but is mostly bright and shiny with strong rifling. The stock has a number of small dings and scratches from use. Both inspector's cartouches remain on the left flat of the stock. The gun is dated 1862 on the lock plate and barrel. No collection of Civil War arms is complete without a Model 1861 Rifle Musket!
