Item :	RARE, 1ST TYPE U.S. M1880 HUNTING KNIFE IN A 1ST TYPE SCABBARD

Here is a rare, original U.S. Model 1880 Hunting Knife in a 1st Type Scabbard made at Springfield Armory in 1881. The first 1,002 knives produced had iron guards; later knives had brass guards. This is one of those iron mounted knives. The knife is in its original 1st Type Scabbard with a hinged locking bar. The knife and scabbard are a little rough, condition-wise. The knife is heavily pitted and has several chips broken from the blade. One small pit in the fuller goes completely through the blade. The serial number "510" is faintly visible on the right side of the guard, but the Springfield Armory Marking on the left side is no longer visible. The butt is correctly stamped "S.W.P." over "1881". There are a couple of tiny chips in the butt. The scabbard is complete, but in fair condition. The leather strap behind the hinged locking bar is torn, about halfway across. The remaining leather has some surface cracking, especially at any flex points. The brass is in good condition with a dark bronze patina. The scabbard is marked "WATERVLIET ARSENAL" on the back of the strap, but it is barely legible. Although not in the best condition, this is a very rare knife that is seldom encountered in its earliest configuration. Stock no. 21184
