SCARCE, ROBBINS, KENDALL, & LAWRENCE U.S. MODEL 1841 RIFLE

Description :
|
This is an original U.S. Model 1841 Rifle produced by Robbins, Kendall, and Lawrence in 1847. The firm of Robbins, Kendall, and Lawrence produced 10,000 of these rifles from 1845 to 1848. Known as the "Mississippi" rifle by virtue of its service with Jefferson Davis's Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican American War, the Model 1841 soldiered on into the Civil War. It was used by both sides. In addition, settlers bound west on the Oregon Trail could purchase one of these rifles from the government. They are referrred to as jaegers or yaugers in contemporary accounts. Originally, the M1841 fired a patched .54 round ball. This rifle has been smooth bored, a shotgun being a more versatile arm on the frontier. The rifle is in fine condition. The barrel has a smooth, mottled brown patina. The lock has developed a dark pewter patina. The brass furniture has a nice even golden bronze patina. The mechanics are excellent. The smooth bore has some pitting. The stock is in fine condition with just a few small dings from use. There are two nice inspector's cartouches on the left flat of the stock. The Mississippi Rifle is a great historic arm, with service in two wars and America's Westward expansion. Even smooth bored, this is a great display example with scarce markings. As someone once told me, you can't display a bore! Stock no. 21216
