1846 DATED, SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1842 MUSKET
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1842 Musket manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1846. It is a .69 caliber smooth bore. The M1842 has the distinction of being the first U.S. Percussion musket design adopted by the United States. It was also the last smooth-bore musket design manufactured. It was replaced by the M1855 Rifle-Musket. They continued to be issued and were used throughout the Civil War. This musket is in very good to fine condition. It has a nice brownish pewter patina overall. The hammer is a little darker, with a smooth brown patina. The mechanics are excellent. The bore has darkened and has some pitting, but is very good overall. The stock is very good as well, with the usual small dings and scratches from use. The inspector's cartouches are faint but visible. The lock and barrel markings are strong. Both the lock and tang are dated 1846. This is a very good example of a musket that saw wide use in the Civil War. Stock no. 21309
