Item :	IVORY STOCKED, COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY .36 CALIBER REVOLVER

Description :

This is an original Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver produced in 1856. It is a percussion revolver of .36 caliber. It is fitted with one-piece ivory grips. They appear to be factory grips, but I do not know for sure. The gun is all matching except for the wedge, which is mis-matched. At some time, the front sight was replaced with a more usable, dove-tailed blade. The hammer notch sight was enlarged at that time. The butt is stamped on the grip strap in a heavy lettered "O M C". I have not been able to determine just what that might mean. The revolver is in very good condition. Traces of color remain on the frame. There are also traces of blue on the gun, especially the loading lever. The majority of the gun has a brownish steel patina. Most of the cylinder scene remains visible. The bore is good, a little dark but with strong rifling throughout. The action works well. For some reason, it feels a little odd when you cock it. The main spring is pretty stiff, which might account for the difference. The brass grip straps have a nice golden brass patina. The one-piece ivory grips are complete and have a nicely aged patina. There is a check crack on the right grip side running up about 2 1/4" along the back strap. For good looking revolvers, a '51 Navy with ivory grips is hard to beat! Stock no. 21330
