U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1899 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very good to fine condition. It retains about 60% of its armory blued finish, most of which is on the barrel. Most of the finish wear is on the stock furniture. The case hardened receiver has a faded dark gray color. The magazine has a speckled finish with about 20% color remaining. The bolt has a steel pewter color. The fire blued extractor spring has about half of its color remaining. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a fine bore with strong rifling. The stock has some typical small dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp "1899" dated inspector's cartouche on the left side of the stock and a "P" proof on the underside of the wrist. This is a nice representative example of the Krag rifle. Stock no. 21384
