EARLY, SMITH & WESSON NO. 2 OLD MODEL REVOLVER
Description :
This is an original, Civil War, Smith & Wesson No. 2 Old Model Revolver. Also known as the No. 2 Army Model, this was a 6-shot revolver firing a .32 rimfire cartridge. First manufactured in 1861, these were very popular with officers and enlisted men as a personal sidearm during the Civil War. George Armstrong Custer owned a pair of these revolvers. Post war, Wild Bill Hickok was carrying a No. 2 S&W when he was killed in Deadwood, South Dakota. This early revolver, with its low 1,4xx serial number and two pin cylinder stop is a definite Civil War era gun. It is in very good condition, retaining about 60% of its original factory blued finish. There is some pitting on both sides of the barrel, consistent with holster storage. The cylinder also has some pitting in a couple of small areas. Most of the cylinder finish is gone, leaving a pewter gray / brown finish. There are small pitted areas on the frame just above the grips. The mechanics are excellent and the bore is very fine, shiny with strong rifling. The rosewood grips are very fine, retaining most of their varnish, and having just a couple tiny dings from use. This is a very nice example of a Civil War Smith & Wesson No. 2 Army revolver. Stock no. 21436
