Item No.: 8145 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR REMINGTON TYPE I "SPLIT BREECH" CARBINE
Description :
Here is an original Remington Type I "Split Breech" Breech Loading Carbine chambered for the .46 rimfire cartridge. The "Split Breech" Remington was the predecessor of the later "Rolling Block" rifles. It was the first Remington arm chambered for a metallic cartridge, and the last type arm supplied on contract to the Union Army before the war ended. Production of the carbine was sub-contracted to the Savage Revolving Arms Co. of Middletown, Ct. Fewer than 5,000 of the Type I were produced. This carbine is in very good to fine condition. The gun has a smooth brown patina overall, with traces of the blued finish remaining. I believe most of the blue has turned brown. The case hardened receiver has the same brown patina as the rest of the gun. The mechanics work very well. The bore is good. It is dirty and could use a scrubbing, but it exhibits strong rifling throughout. The stock has a number of small dings and scratches from use. There is no visible cartouche and the carbine was not fitted with a sling ring, indicating a possible civilian purchase. Original, Split Breech Remingtons are very scarce. Stock no. 21416
