Item No.: 8146 Price : SOLD
Item : RARE, CIVIL WAR PALMER BOLT ACTION CARBINE
Description :
This is a Civil War Palmer Bolt Action Carbine manufactured by E. G. Lamson and Company of Windsor, VT. in 1865. The Palmer was a single shot, breech loader firing a .50 caliber rimfire cartridge. It has the distinction of being the first bolt action arm adopted by the U.S. Government. The Palmer was not delivered until June of 1865, arriving too late to see service during the war. Only 1,001 of these were made, making them very scarce. This carbine is in very good to fine condition. It retains about 80% of its factory blued finish on the barrel, which is turning a smooth brown. The case hardened lock and hammer have turned a dark gray, almost black. The remainder of the stock furniture has a mottled steel and brown patina. The mechanism works well. The bore is dark, with some pitting, but has visible rifling along its length. The stock has darkened with age, but is in very good condition. There is a hairline crack on the right side of the stock between the trigger assembly and the lock plate. There is another hairline crack on the left flat of the stock extending about 1 1/2" from the sling bar mount. The left flat of the stock has a strong military acceptance cartouche. This is a good example of a rare U.S. Martial arm. Stock no. 21438
