POSSIBLE MACON ALTERATION OF U.S. M1835/40 FLINTLOCK
Description :
This is a U.S. Model 1835/40 flintlock musket that has been shortened and converted to percussion. The M1835/40 was the last production variant of the Model 1816 style flintlock musket. This musket was made in 1841 and production of percussion arms began a year later. Starting in 1847, they began the conversion of existing flintlocks to percussion. When war broke out in 1861, both sides accelerated their conversion programs. This is a Civil War era alteration of the type done by Macon Arsenal of Georgia for the Confederacy. It is a cone in barrel conversion. It has been shortened between the upper barrel band and the nose cap. The musket is in very good condition. The barrel and lock have a mostly smooth brown patina. The bands, trigger guard, and butt plate have a mottled steel and brown finish. The lock works well. The bore is dark with some pitting, but mostly smooth. The stock is good with a nice dark color. Some kind of decoration was pinned on the right side of the butt and has been removed leaving an outline. I can't guarantee Confederate affiliation, but this would be great for North-South Skirmish Association competition. Stock no. 21424
