Item No.: 8183 Price : SOLD
Item : 1861 DATED, PATTERN 1856 2-BAND ENFIELD RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War era, Pattern 1856 Enfield 2-band Rifle manufactured in 1861. These shorter Enfield rifles were purchased in large quantities by both the North and South during the war. It is believed that over 50,000 were imported between 1861 and 1865. The Union alone purchased 13,000 with more going to the Confederacy. This Enfield is in very good condition, but the brass nose cap of the stock is missing. The rifle has an overall, smooth, dark brown patina. The trigger guard and butt plate are a nice even dark bronze color. The mechanism works very well. The bore is dark with some pitting, but has strong rifling along its length. The stock is very good with a dark coloration. There are a number of small dings and scratches from use. There are no markings that would denote Confederate acquisition. Strangely, the barrel does not have a lug for the saber bayonet, and does not appear to have ever had one. Stock no. 21418
