Item No.: 8235 Price : $2,950.00
Item : MODEL 1843 HALL-NORTH BREECH LOADING PERCUSSION CARBINE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1843 Hall-North Breech Loading Percussion Carbine manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticutt in 1850. The M1843 was the last production variant of the Hall breech loading design. It differed from ealier variants by having a thumb operated lever on the right side of the breech. Produced from 1844-1853, about 10,500 were made. They saw service with the 1st and 2nd US Dragoons in the Mexican war. While this particular carbine was produced too late to serve against Mexico, the M1843 saw a good deal of use by Union Cavalry Regiments in the Civil War. Many units from Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas were equipped with them. Other known units include the 4th Arkansas, 5th Iowa, 8th & 9th New York, 2nd Wisconsin, and 1st Indiana Cavalry Regiments. This carbine is in very good condition. It has no original finish remaining. It has an overall pewter patina, speckled heavily with dark brown. The mechanics work very well. Originally a .52 caliber smoothbore, this carbine has been rifled for Civil War Service. A number of these carbines were bored to .58 caliber when rifled, but this one remains a .52 caliber. The bore is dark with some pitting, but the rifling is visible along its length. The stock is in good condition. It has a number of dings, scratches, and small gouges from years of use. There is the remnant of an inspector's cartouche on the left flat of the stock. The initials H.P.X. are carved into the left side of the butt. The breech markings grow faint towards the bottom, but the 1850 date can be made out. Sub[inspector initials appear on the barrel. This is an interesting gun and the last version of America's first breech loading arm. Stock no. 21613
