Item No.: 8236 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR STARR PERCUSSION CARBINE
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War, Starr Percussion Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York. Similar to the Sharps Carbine in appearance and function, the Starr was a .54 caliber, single shot breech loader. 20,601 were produced between 1862 and 1865. In government tests, the Starr was actually rated as better than the Sharps. Mostly issued in the western theater, the Starr is known to have been used by the 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas, 11th Missouri, and the 24th New York. this Starr is in very good to fine condition. Traces of the factory blued finish remain on the barrel near the breech. The remainder of the barrel has turned a plum brown. No case colors remain on the receiver or lock. They have a silvery pewter patina, speckled with brown. The brass butt plate has a nice bronze patina. The action works very well and the bore is very good. There is some very light pitting, but the rifling is sharp and the bore mostly shiny. The stock is in very good condition, with the usual small dings and scratches from use. There are government sub-inspector initials on the barrel near the breech. The Starr was a well designed cavalry arm, and is mors scarce than the Sharps. Stock no. 21609
