Item :	U.S. MODEL 1817 COMMON RIFLE BY DERINGER

Description :

This is an original, Model 1817 U.S. Flintlock Rifle manufactured by H. Deringer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1823. Known as the "Common" rifle, the M1817 featured a 36" round barrel of .54 caliber, a full stock, and sheet iron patchbox. The "Common" designation was to differentiate it from the breech loading Hall rifle of the same period. Many of these rifles were converted tp percussion and served throughout the Civil War. I am pretty certain this rifle was one that was converted to percussion and that it has been re-converted to its flintlock configuration using an original lock. Overall the rifle is in very good to fine condition. The rifle has an overall smooth brown finish. These guns were originally browned, and I believe some of the barrel finish may be the original brown. There is some pitting around the area of the pan, except for the flat where the lock fits against the barrel. This is smooth and evidence of the re-conversion. The touch hole is slightly off center as well, and more evidence of the re-conversion. The lock works very well. The bore is dark with significant pitting, but the rifling remains visible and strong along its length. The stock is in fine condition, with a few small dings and scratches from use. There is an inspector's cartouche on the left flat of the stock, that may date to the original conversion. The lock and barrel markings are crisp. The date on the barrel tang fades out with the "18" visible, and a very faint "2". The last digit can not be made out. Even with the re-conversion, this Common Rifle is in better condition than many.
