Item No.: 8265 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR, P.S. JUSTICE .69 CALIBER MUSKET, BARN FIND
Description :
This is an original, Civil War .69 caliber smooth bore musket manufactured by P.S. Justice of Philadelphia in about 1861. These muskets were an attempt by Justice to help supply the Union Army with the long arms they so desperately needed. He was one of the earliest suppliers of arms to the Union. These muskets were generally of lesser quality than the government produced arms, but filled a need early in the war. This musket includes its original bayonet. The musket was reportedly found in a barn in Salisbury, North Carolina. It remains in "as found", untouched, near relic condition. The bayonet has been affixed since it was placed in the barn and the barrel is bright under the socket. Overall the gun is pretty rough, but it is all there and rates an "antique good" condition-wise. It has a rough dark brown finish with heavy pitting overall. The areas over the markings have been cleaned, so those markings can be read. The lock and mechanics work well. The bore is very dark and pitted. The stock is in terrible condition. It is covered with dings, scrapes, scratches, and gouges. The wood is very dry. The butt area has some dry rot, so the butt plate screws are loose and won't tighten down. The bayonet is very good with an overall dark brown patina. This musket is for those who like their Civil War relics in their purest form! Stock no. 21625
