Item No.: 8338 Price : SOLD
Item : FINE, U.S. MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1902 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very good to fine condition. The barrel retains more than 95% of its armory blued finish. The stock furniture, such as nose cap, barrel bands, trigger guard, and butt plate have turned a smooth light brown. The receivers on the Krag were oil quenched, resulting in a mottled black finish. This rifle retains a good 85% of the cased finish. The bolt remains armory brigfht with a few speckles of patina along the top. The fire blued extractor spring has dulled to a more standard blue. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore has a little pitting, but this has been polished to a smoother finish. The rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The stock is very fine with a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left side of the stock. It is dated 1902. There are a few small dings and scratches from use and storage. The receiver lettering has been highlighted with old paint. This is generally easily removed if not to your liking. This is a fine old Krag. They are increasingly hard to find. Stock no. 21946
