Here is an American, Kentucky Long Rifle, probably built in the 1850's in Pennsylvania. It is a full stocked, percussion rifle of about .45 caliber. The top flat of the barrel is signed in a cursive hand, but is no longer legible. The lock was made by Whitmore & Wolff of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Whitmore & Wolff were hardware dealers who supplied locks and barrels to local gunmakers and gunstockers. This allowed them to produce more arms in less time. This rifle is in very good condition. The barrel and lock have an overall dark brown patina. The brass furniture appears to have been given a protective varnish coat many years ago. Where this remains the brass has the appearance of gilt. Most of the brass has a dark bronze patina. The lock works well. The Whitmore & Wolff markings are clear. The 40" barrel is rifled with round bottom grooves. The bore is dark and rusty. The barrel has an unusual "snail" bolster to direct cap flash away from the shooter. The curly maple stock has good figure. It is in fine condition. There are some small dings and scratches from use. The handsome brass patch box has 5 piercings. There is a silver thump piece and a silver cheekpiece. Both have tarnished where the clear coat has worn away. The cheekpiece features an engraved federal style eagle. The barrel is held by four wedges. The two center wedges are missing. The ramrod is simply a dowel someone used as a replacement. It has been broken off at the front end. This is a fine old Pennsylvania Long Rifle of the percussion era. Stock no. 22020
