AMERICAN LONG RIFLE BY WM. BLAIR, CA. 1820

Description :
|
Here is an American Kentucky Long Rifle made by William Blair, probably in the 1820's. It is a full stocked rifle of about .40 caliber with a 40 1/2" barrel. It is fitted with double set triggers and has a tasteful, 4 piece brass patch box with no engraving. Originally a flintlock, this rifle has been converted to percussion with a drum and bolster. The barrel is signed on the top flat. The rifle is in very good condition overall. The barrel and lock have a dark brown patina, mostly smooth. The brass furniture has a nice golden brass patina with a darker bronze color in the protected areas. The lock and set triggers work well. The bore has strong rifling, but is dark and rough. The curly maple stock is fine with beautiful, strong, tiger stripe figure. There are two old cracks on either side of the forearm just ahead of the ramrod entry pipe. Both are worn smooth from years of handling and they do not seem to affect the rifle structurally. The hickory ramrod is tapered. It projects about an inch past the muzzle and that inch is blackened from the muzzle blast of the rifle. It may not be the original, but it has been with the rifle for a very long time. This is a good looking rifle with clean lines and good architecture. Stock no. 21628
