Item No.: 8418 Price : SOLD
Item : "NEW ORLEANS" MARKED AMERICAN LONG RIFLE
Description :
Here is an original, American Long Rifle dating to the early 1800's. Originally a flintlock, the gun was later converted to percussion with a drum and nipple and new hammer. The lock plate is marked "New Orleans", but any other markings were removed during the conversion. This was probably the address of the dealer who sold the lock to the gunmaker. The rifle is in very good to fine condition. The barrel and lock have a pewter patina with a speckling of brown. There is some pitting around the bolster from cap flash. The rifle has a 37" barrel of about .36 caliber. The bore is dark but the rifling is visible along its length. The lock needs some work. The hammer will not stay cocked in either position. The double set triggers appear to be in working condition. The stock is in fine condition. Made from highly figured curly maple, it has a strong tiger stripe grain pattern. There is one small chip missing at the back of the lock mortise and a small crack at the very toe of the stock, about 3/8" long. The brass furniture has a pleasing yellow bronze patina. The ramrod is a later replacement. This is a nice early American rifle that will look great over the fireplace. Stock no. 22021
