|
Description :
|
This is a Civil War era Sharps Cavalry Carbine that has been converted to fire the .50-70 Centerfire cartridge. Following the end of the war, the government found itself with thousands of percussion arms in a new era of cartridge guns. The government decided to convert a number of these arms to use cartridges. One of the arms selected was the Sharps Carbine. In 1867, they contracted with the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company to do the conversions. 31,098 carbines were converted. The conversion consisted of relining the barrel to .50 caliber with 3-groove rifling and installing a new breech block with a firing pin. In instances where the bore diameter was less than .5225", the original 6-groove barrel was retained. These converted carbines served well into the era of the Indian Wars. This carbine has the relined .50 caliber barrel. The gun is in very good condition. It retains no original finish, having an overall steel color with a speckling of brown. The action locks up tightly and the mechanism is excellent. There is some pitting in the bore, but the rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The stock is in very good condition. It has the usual small dings and scratches from years of use. This would be a perfect gun for a new black powder cartridge shooter who wants to shoot an original. Stock no. 22035
