LARGE, .78 CALIBER ENGLISH FLINTLOCK TRADE PISTOL
Description :
Here is a large, Victorian Era, English Flintlock Pistol. The 8 1/2" round barrel has a whopping .78 caliber bore. Pistols of this type were used as trade items all over the world. Flintlocks were still used as trade items in Africa as late as the 1890's. This pistol is in fair to good condition. It has a dark brown patina with areas of pitting, especially on the lock and hammer. The lock comes to half and full cock, but at full cock, the hammer won't fall when the trigger is pulled. You have to ease the hammer back a bit to get the trigger to release it. The bore is dark and heavily pitted. The stock is a little battered. There is a break near the fore-end running between the ramrod pipes and only a single barrel pin holds that piece in place. The lock fits poorly in the mortise. The lock is marked with a Crown over "V.R.". There are two British proofs on the barrel. This is a nice old relic of the British Empire. Stock no. 22835
