Item :	19TH CENTURY FLINTLOCK MILITIA MUSKET, .70 CALIBER

Here is an original Flintlock Musket or Fusil dating to the first quarter of the 19th century. Many states, particularly in New England, required their citizens to serve in the militia after the Revolution and well into the 1800's. Some states would provide you with a musket if you did not have one. These "militia" muskets were made by small gunmakers throughout the country. This musket shows strong English influence. The musket's barrel is just shy of 39" long and is about 70 caliber. It has an imported lock marked "LONDON WARRANTED". The barrel is dated "1838" which is probably the date of manufacture. The gun is in fine condition. The barrel has a smooth, mottled pewter and brown patina. The lockplate has been cleaned and is now steel colored. The brass has been polished and is redeveloping a nice golden patina. The lock works well. The bore is actually not bad. There is some pitting and it needs a scrubbing, but should clean up significantly. The stock is in fine condition with the usual small dings and scratches from use. There is a chip along the barrel tang. There is a rectangular brass plaque inlet into the stock with the name "Wm. W. VEAZIE" engraved on it. The Veazie name shows up most commonly in Massachusetts history in the first half of the 19th century. Unfortunately, whoever cleaned this gun up took some of the finish off the wood around this plaque when they polished the brass. This is a very handsome early musket that displays beautifully.
