Item :	1813 DATED FRENCH "AN XIII" CUIRASSIER HEAVY CAVALRY SWORD AND SCABBARD

This is an original, Napoleonic Era, French Model "An XIII" heavy cavalry sword and scabbard. This was the sword of the French Cuirassier of the Napoléon Grande Armée. Cuirassiers were heavy cavalry and used the "Year 13" sword to great effect. This sword was made in September of 1813. it is marked along the spine with "Manufacture Impériale du Kligenthal Septembre 1813". The sword has a 94 cm. (37 1/2") blade with a double fuller and a spear point. It retains its original leather grip with an 11 spiral wire wrap. The guard and blade have numerous inspector's marks and unit markings stamped into the metal. The front of the guard is marked wit "A" over "31". The sword is in an original 3rd type heavy scabbard. This had a symmetrical drag and was of heavier construction than the earlier models. The sword is in very fine condition, but has been plated at a later date for ceremonial purposes. Both the sword and scabbard retain nearly all of this finish, but there are two small spots of corrosion on the throat of the scabbard. This is a beautiful sword that may have served at Waterloo!
