Item No.: 8858 Price : SOLD
Item : VERY FINE, WWI, REMINGTON MANUFACTURED FRENCH M1907/15 BERTHIER-MANNLICHER RIFLE
Description :
Here is an original, WWI, French Model 1907/15 Berthier-Mannlicher Rifle manufactured under contract by the Remington Union Metallic Cartridge Co. of America. It is chambered for the 8mm Lebel cartridge. Originally intended for provincial troops, the Berthier was redesigned and simplified for mass production in WWI. The newly designated M1907/15 saw widespread use throughout the war and became a standard arm of the French Army. At the start of the war, Remington UMC contracted with the French government to produce 200,000 of these M1907/15 rifles. These Remington made rifles feature superior fit and finish, but French inspectors rejected the rifles, alleging that the rifling and chambering dimensions did not meet French standards. The contract was canceled after only about half of the rifles had been produced. The existing Remington made rifles were sold on the commercial market. This is one of those rifles. It is in very fine, original condition. More than 90% of the original factory blued finish remains. There is light finish wear on the barrel band and the bottom of the trigger guard. The only significant finish loss is on the butt plate, which apparently rested on a damp surface. The metal has a dark brown patina and there is an area of pitting on the heel of the butt, about the size of a quarter. The bolt remains armory bright with just a light touch of brown patina on the thumb piece. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The stock is very fine as well, but there does appear to be a small filled ding on the left side of the wrist. It is about the size of a kidney bean and the color matches the stock pretty well. The leather sling appears to be original and is in very fine condition, with supple leather and no cracking. Even with the small rough area on the butt plate, this is an outstanding example of the French 07/15 Berthier rifle. Stock no. 23455
