Item :	FINE, PROVIDENCE TOOL U.S. MODEL 1861 RIFLE MUSKET

Description :

This is an original, Civil War, U.S. Model 1861 Contract Rifle Musket of .58 caliber. The Model 1861 eliminated the Maynard tape primer of the earlier Model 1855 Rifle musket and was the standard U.S. Musket of the Civil War. Though Springfield production ended in 1862, production by contractors continued right through the end of the war. It served from the opening shots to the surrender at Appomattox. This rifle musket was produced by the Providence Tool company of Providence, Rhode Island in 1864. Providence Tool was a major contractor of the Civil War era with 70,000 Model 1861 Rifle Muskets produced. This musket is in fine to very fine condition. It remains armory bright, as finished. There are just a few tiny speckles of brown. The lock works perfectly and the bore is very good. There is some light pitting in places, but the rifling is visible along the barrel's length. The barrel and lock markings remain crisp. The walnut stock is fine as well with a few small dings from use. The inspector's cartouche remains visible on the left flat of the stock. This is a very fine example of a Civil War Contract 1861 Rifle Musket. Stock no. 24115
