Item No.: 9501 Price : SOLD
Item : FINE, U.S. MODEL 1817 COMMON RIFLE BY SIMEON NORTH
Description :
This is an original, Model 1817 U.S. Flintlock Rifle manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut in 1825. North made 7,200 of these rifles under contract from 1825-1829. Known as the "Common" rifle, the M1817 featured a 36" round barrel of .54 caliber, a full stock, and sheet iron patchbox. The "Common" designation was to differentiate it from the breech loading Hall rifle of the same period. This rifle may be a very well done re-conversion to flintlock. Most were converted to percussion for use in the Civil War and some have been converted back to flintlock using original locks. If that is the case here, it is expertly done and very hard to detect. The rifle is in very good to fine condition. These rifles were originally browned and it can sometimes be hard to differentiate between brown finish and patina. It looks like about 50% of the brown finish remains on the gun with the remainder being brown patina. The lock works well. The bore is dark with fine pitting, but the rifling remains strong along the bore's length. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. There is a clear inspector's cartouche on the left flat of the stock. Even if re-converted, this is a great example of a M1817 Common Rifle. Stock no. 25234
