RICHARDS-MASON CONVERSION OF COLT MODEL 1861 NAVY REVOLVER
Description :
This is a cartridge conversion of a Colt Model 1861 Navy percussion revolver. This is a Colt standard factory conversion done in the mid-1870's. Made from previously unfinished and unassembled parts, it is a Richards-Mason type conversion. Only about 2200 of these were made. It was offered in either .38 rimfire or .38 centerfire. This revolver is .38 rimfire. These cartridge conversions of percussion arms played a huge roll in Western expansion well into the 1880's. A conversion could be had for a fraction of the price of the purpose built cartridge guns offered by the big manufacturers. This was not an insignificant consideration for a working cowboy. This revolver is in good condition overall. It has seen significant use and the finish has suffered a bit. The revolver was nickel plated at one time and about 20% of this finish remains. The remaining finish is on the grip straps and the right side of the frame. The rest of the gun has a steel patina with significant pitting on the barrel and left side of the frame. The action and mechanics work well. The bore is dark and rusty. The grips are in very good conditionWith a little wear on the high points and corners. There is an old chip on the forward corner of the left grip panel. All visible numbers are matching, but I don't want to try to get the wedge out. The wedge screw and a couple of frame screws may be replacements. This old revolver may be worn, but it is a true Old West cowboy gun. Stock no. 26311
