Item No.: 9842 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR SPENCER US MODEL 1860 REPEATING CAVALRY CARBINE, .52 CAL.
Description :
Here is an original, US Model 1860 Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company of Boston, Massachusetts. It is chambered for the 56-56 cartridge which is .52 caliber rimfire. Built as both an Army Rifle and as a Cavalry Carbine, the Spencer was a revolutionary design that was endorsed by no less a personage than President Abraham Lincoln. It was a lever action repeater with a seven round tubular magazine that was inserted through the butt plate. The Spencer rapidly proved its worth in battle, with the carbine becoming the second most issued cavalry arm of the Civil War. It served well into the Indian War era. This Spencer Carbine is in very good condition. The lock plate, hammer, and lever have been reblued and retain most of their finish. Very little finish remains on the barrel, which has a mottled brown patina. You can just see traces of the case color pattern on the receiver, which has turned gray. The butt plate has some blue remaining with areas turning brown. The carbine has excellent mechanics and a good bore. There is some light pitting in a couple of spots, but the rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The stock is in fine condition with a few dings and scratches from use. There is a shallow gouge on the left side of the butt about the size of a small bean. Don't miss out on that damn Yankee rifle you could load in the morning and shoot all day. Stock no. 27455
