Item No.: 10305 Price : $1,295.00
Item : US MODEL 1866 2ND MODEL ALLIN CONVERSION RIFLE, .50-70
Description :
This is an original, Model 1866 U.S. Breech-Loading Rifle manufactured in 1866 and chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. Also known as the Second Model Allin "Trapdoor" conversion, these rifles were designed by Erskine S. Allin at Springfield Armory. Following the Civil War, the US military saw the need for a breech loading cartridge arm. Allin designed a rifle that could be converted from existing stocks of Model 1863 percussion muskets. The first Model Allin used the original M1863 barrels and was chambered for a .58 caliber rimfire cartridge. The Second Model Allin was rebarreled and chambered for the .50-70 cartridge. It was the first centerfire Trapdoor. The design would last into the 1880's. This rifle is in very good condition with a smooth dark brown patina overall. There is some steel patina along the barrel channel. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a fine bore. There are a few speckles in the bore but mostly it is smooth and shiny with strong rifling. The stock is in very good condition with a scattering of small dings and gouges from use. Inspector's cartouches remain visible on the left flat of the stock. If you have a mind to load up and shoot some black powder cartridges, this rifle is a good choice. Stock no. 30037
