Item :	CIVIL WAR, H&P SIGHTED SMOOTHBORE 1816 CONVERSION MUSKET, .69 CALIBER

Description :

This is an H&P Type II percussion conversion of a U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket made by Springfield Armory in 1826. Muskets of this type were used in large numbers by both sides during the Civil War. With thousands of flintlock muskets sitting in arsenals, the government began converting them to percussion in 1847. With the outbreak of war, the conversion programs swung into full gear. Both government arsenals and private contractors converted muskets in large numbers. As late as Gettysburg in 1863, over 60% of the arms on the field were large caliber smooth bore muskets. This musket was converted by a private contractor, Hewes & Phillips, distinguished by its "bolster" type modification and sighted smoothbore barrel. These conversions are dated on the top of the breech and this one was done in 1863. The musket is in very good condition with an overall dark brown patina. The patina is mostly smooth, and you can see the original armory bright steel along the top of the barrel channel. The butt plate has a rough brown patina. The long-range rear sight retains much of its blued finish. The musket has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The bore remains mostly shiny and smooth with just a few speckles. The stock is very good to fine with a few small dings and gouges from use. There is a visible inspector's cartouche on the left flat of the stock. The ramrod is just a bit short, ending about an inch from the muzzle in an empty bore. If you need a smoothbore musket for NSSA competition, this one is perfect. Stock no. 30249
