Item No.: 10352 Price : $1,995.00
Item : U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1879 TRAPDOOR CAVALRY CARBINE, .45-70 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1879 Trapdoor Cavalry Carbine manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1882. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. Built between 1879 and 1885, about 15,000 were produced. This carbine is in very good to fine condition. It retains about 80% of its factory blued finish. The remaining blue is just starting to develop a plum color. There is some finish wear on high points and on the trigger plate. The butt plate has little finish left. There is some mottling on the hammer. The case color on the breechblock and barrel tang has mostly darkened to black. The gun has excellent mechanics. The bore is good. There is some pitting, mostly up near the muzzle, but most of the bore is shiny and the rifling is visible along its length. The stock is very good with a few small dings and scratches from use. There is a clear inspector's cartouche, dated 1882, on the left side of the wrist. The butt trap contains the original 3-piece cleaning rod (One Piece is not visible in the photos) and a Model 1882 .45-70 broken shell case extractor. This carbine has a star after the serial number, the purpose of which is unknown. Stock no. 30266
