Item No.: 10377 Price : SOLD
Item : VERY HEAVY, "W. PANNEBECKER" FLINTLOCK, BENCH REST TARGET RIFLE, CIRCA 1825
Description :
This is an original flintlock target rifle of about 65 caliber, probably dating to the 1820's to 1830's. This rifle was made for shooting from a rest, either a bench or over a log at a "chunk" match. It has an extremely heavy barrel, measuring 1 5/8" across the flats and just under 42" in length. The deep cut rifling has 8 round bottom grooves. The muzzle has holes for a muzzle protector, but that has been lost to time. The barrel is held in place by three barrel keys. The top flat has a maker's mark that I believe is "W. Pannebecker". He worked in Mohntown, Berks County, Pennsylvania from 1800 to 1840. The lock is a late commercial type with a waterproof pan and a roller on the frizzen spring, proper for that time period. The stock is nicely figured curly maple with no butt plate ever having been fitted. The trigger guard and ramrod pipes are brass. The sights are a globe type front, tiny notched rear sight on the barrel, and a lollipop style tang sight with long buck horns. The rifle has double set triggers. I would say this gun is in antique good condition. The barrel has a rough, dark brown patina with fine pitting overall. The maker's name is visible but very hard to make out. Brass parts have a nice dark bronze patina. The lock is missing the frizzen and does not cock. It has some pitting as well. There is no blade for the front sight. The tang sight is bent, most likely from having the weight of the rifle placed on it. The bore is dark and has pitting, but that deep cut rifling is strongly visible along the bore's length. The stock has some powder post beetle holes in it and some water stains at the butt. The tapered wooden ramrod appears to be original. With a little work, I believe this old girl could shoot some chunk matches once again. Stock No. 30393
