WINCHESTER U.S. MODEL 1917 RIFLE, .30-06, W/SLING, WWII REBUILD

Description :
|
This is an original, WWI, U.S. Model 1917 Rifle produced by Winchester in 1917. The U.S. Model 1917 was based on the British P-14 Rifle being produced under contract by Winchester, Remington, and Eddystone. The British contracts ended just as America entered WWI. Rather than retool to make the Model 1903, it was decided to alter the P-14 to accept the U.S. .30-06 Government cartridge, and the M1917 Rifle was born. Over 2.5 million were produced before the war's end. The M1917 actually saw more service in the war than the '03 Springfield. Alvin York won his Congressional Medal of Honor with a Model 1917 Rifle. This rifle was refurbished for WWII service. It was rebarreled, but retains its original WWI blued finish. The replacement barrel was made by Johnson Automatics. The stock may also be an armory replacement. All of the other parts appear to be original to the rifle. There is a rebuild/reinspection stamp on the left side of the stock, "3 GM-K", about which theories abound. No one really seems to know for sure what it really means. This rifle is in fine condition with about 90% of its blued finish remaining. There is light overall wear on high edges with a bit more on the magazine floor plate. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is fair to good. It has been cleaned, but you can see that there was some pitting and erosion of the lands in places. The stock is in fine condition with a crisp reinspection cartouche and just a couple of tiny dings from use. Included is an original, WWII M1 web sling in fine condition with a little soiling. It is marked and dated, but I can't quite make out the date. Even though this is a WWII rebuild, it looks almost exactly as it would have in WWI. This is a nice Winchester Model 1917 rifle.
