Item No.: 10605 Price : $1,695.00
Item : U.S. MODEL 1866 BREECH-LOADING RIFLE, 2ND MODEL ALLIN CONVERSION, .50-70
Description :
This is an original, Model 1866 U.S. Breech-Loading Rifle manufactured in 1866 and chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. Also known as the Second Model Allin "Trapdoor" conversion, these rifles were designed by Erskine S. Allin at Springfield Armory. Following the Civil War, the US military saw the need for a breech loading cartridge arm. Allin designed a rifle that could be converted from existing stocks of Model 1863 percussion muskets. The first Model Allin used the original M1863 barrels and was chambered for a .58 caliber rimfire cartridge. The Second Model Allin was rebarreled and chambered for the .50-70 cartridge. It was the first centerfire Trapdoor. The design would last into the 1880's. Interestingly, this is the type of rifle with which William Cody earned the nickname "Buffalo Bill". His rifle, "Lucretia Borgia" was a 2nd Model Allin conversion. This rifle is in fine condition. The metal remains mostly armory bright with some light speckling. There is some browning of the trigger guard and butt plate. The lock and hammer have lost all of their case color and have a steel patina. The breech block is also a steel color. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The stock is very fine with just a tiny ding or two from use or storage. This is a very nice 2nd Allin. Stock no. 31712
