CIVIL WAR, SAVAGE NAVY MODEL U.S. PERCUSSION REVOLVER, .36 CALIBER
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War, Navy Model U.S. Revolver manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Company of Middletown, Connecticut. It is a percussion cap & ball revolver of .36 caliber with a 7-inch barrel. It uses a unique predecessor to the later double-action designs. There are two triggers. The lower, larger trigger cocks the gun and rotates the cylinder. The upper trigger fires the gun. About 20.000 of these were made between 1861 and 1863 with the U.S. government purchasing 11,984 of those. This is a military revolver with sub-inspector's initials and an inspector's cartouche on the left grip scale. It is in very good condition with a steel/brown patina. There is little to no original finish remaining. The cylinder and barrel are browner than the frame. The action needs a little work. The lower trigger brings the hammer back and rotates the cylinder, but it will not stay cocked. If you release the trigger, the hammer falls to half-cock. The upper trigger seems to work correctly. The bore and chambers look good. They have a brown patina but are mostly smooth. There is a small speck or two in the bore. The grips are very good with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There is a visible inspector's cartouche on the left grip. No Civil War pistol collection is complete without a Savage! Stock no. 31514
