Item :	SCARCE U.S. MODEL 1840 FOOT OFFICER'S SWORD AND SCABBARD

This is an original, U.S. Model 1840 Foot Officer's Sword and Scabbard of the Mexican War era. It resembles the Model 1840 NCO sword, but the Officer's swords were individually purchased by the officer and could be customized to his liking. The NCO sword was mass produced, so you will see more variation in the Foot Officer's swords. Replaced by the Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword, they are also much scarcer. After 1850, the Model 1840 was generally only worn by Generals. There is a well-known photo of Ambrose Burnside wearing one during the war. This sword, while not extensively decorated, differs from an NCO sword by having a 32" etched blade with eagles, stands of arms, and a large "U.S." on the left side. The right side has a small scroll with "E Pluribus Unum". The "D" guard has raised floral decoration. The pommel has raised acanthus leaves. The left side of the guard folds to lay flat when worn, though some NCO swords also had this feature. The sword is in fine condition. The blade has a steel gray patina with a heavy scattering of rust spots that have turned a dark brown. The hilt and guard have a nice dark bronze patina with a penny sized spot of dark tarnish on the outside of the folding guard. The sword is in the early leather scabbard with brass tip and throat. The brass patina closely matches the sword. The scabbard is in fine condition with supple leather. This is a scarce American sword. I have had many 1840 NCO swords, but this is the first Foot Officer's sword I have had. Stock no. 31781
