Item : ANTIQUE GRAS MODEL 1874/80 RIFLE W/BAYONET, 11X59MM RIMMED
Description :
Here is a French Gras Model 1874 Rifle manufactured at St. Etienne in 1876 and chambered for the 11x59mm Rimmed cartridge. It has been fitted with the modifications of 1880. This was the addition of a groove in the receiver to direct gases away from the shooter if the cartridge case ruptured. The Gras replaced the needle fire Chassepot rifle and was the first purpose built metallic cartridge firing rifle in French Service. This rifle is in fair to good condition with all mismatched numbers and no original finish remaining. The rifle has a mostly brown patina with some areas having a steel gray patina. The mechanics work well. The bore is dark and frosty but has strong rifling visible along its length. The stock is complete but dark and oily. It has a heavy scattering of small dings, scratches, and gouges from use. The included bayonet is in vary good condition. It was mad at St. Etienne in 1880. The blade remains mostly bright with a few spots of light surface rust. The guard and hooked quillon have a dark brown patina. The brass pommel is a nice dark bronze color. The scabbard has about 60% of its blued finish remaining with some overall rust speckling. Stock no. 30902
