This is a Flintlock Pistol typical of those that Hollywood has come to associate with Pirates of the High Seas. In truth, it was probably made for trade in the Mediterranean or the Middle East. It is ornate with carved brass mountings, engraving, and a 10-inch, octagon to round, tapered and flared barrel of about .58 caliber. The stock uses wire inlay decoration, as well. The gun is in good condition. The barrel and lock have a steel gray patina. There is some pitting on the hammer. The brass mountings have a golden patina. The details appear to be cast-in leaving the detail a little blurred. I believe that the mainspring in the lock is broken or missing. The hammer pulls back with no resistance. There is some rust in the bore, but the bore has been cleaned. the stock is fair with a long crack along the right side of the barrel channel running back about four inches. there are a couple of short cracks running from the side plate to the barrel channel on the left side of the gun. Also, the barrel pin is missing, allowing the barrel to lift from the stock. With a bit of effort, one can be fashioned from an old iron nail. The wood at the butt has shrunken away from the butt cap as it dried over the years. The double throated hammer on this gun probably dates it to the early 1800's.
