This is an original, British No.5, Mk I Jungle Carbine manufactured in 1946 and chambered for the .303 British cartridge. Officially adopted in September of 1944, the Jungle carbine was intended as a shorter, lighter alternative to the No.4, Mk I rifle. This is a genuine jungle carbine with the flutes milled in the barrel shank. It is in good condition with about 30% of its original black finish remaining. It has overall finish wear, heaviest on the magazine and butt plate. The mechanics are excellent with a mismatched bolt. The bore is in poor condition. it is dark and rough. It may be a lot of fouling and carbon that will clean out. The rifling is strongly visible along the barrel's length and I would give it a hard scrubbing. The stock is in good condition with a scattering of dings and scratches from use. There is some deterioration of the black rubber butt pad on the butt. There is an old rack number painted on the butt. There is an old arsenal repair on top of the wrist. There are tiny importer marks on the barrel. Genuine Jungle carbines are getting harder to find.
