Item :	BEAUTIFUL JOSEPH MANTON CHILD'S FLINTLOCK FOWLING PIECE, CA. 1818

Here is a Flintlock Fowling Piece made by preeminent Gunmaker Joseph Manton of London, England. Built ca. 1815-1820, this was made for a child, possibly a royal family member, and is only 41-1/2" long. It is a half-stock, flintlock with a 28-inch barrel of about 24 gauge. The barrel is octagonal at the breech. After 6-inches the edges are filed to make 16 facets. This section is about 4-inches long and terminates in a wedding band. The remainder of the barrel is round. The barrel has a strong Damascus pattern. I am not sure if it is actually Damascus or a faux Damascus finish. The Manton lock is exquisite with a waterproof pan, roller on the frizzen spring, and a sliding safety on the lock plate behind the hammer. The touch hole liner is gold and there is a gold band inlet on the breech of the gun. There is a clean out screw on the left side of the breech. There is a Manton Maker's cartouche on the top flat of the breech. It was covered in gold, but some of this has flaked off. This little gun is in very fine condition. The barrel retains more than 95% of its brown Damascus finish. This finish was given a coat of varnish when the gun was made to protect the brown. There is light some speckling where the varnish has come off, but most of it remains. The gun is iron mounted and these mountings and the lock have a mostly smooth, brownish/steel patina. The hammer has a smooth dark brown patina. The mechanics are excellent. There is a little rust in the pan. The bore is very good. There are a few small pits, but for the most part it is smooth. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. It is made of nicely figured English Walnut. There are some light file marks or scratches on the flat at the back of the lock. There is also a tiny 1/4" hairline crack in the wood at the very rear tip of the lock. The wrist has beautiful cut checkering. I believe that the nose cap is horn. There is a small silver thumb plate just behind the barrel tang. It is engraved with what appears to be a royal cipher. There is a Crown over a script letter "D". At least I think that it is a "D". The trigger guard and barrel tang are engraved. The gun retains its original ramrod with a brass cupped tip and the original worm on the other end. This is a beautiful little fowler built by one of England's finest makers. Stock no. 32696
