Item No.: 10776 Price : $3,250.00
Item : RARE, CIVIL WAR, C.S. PETTENGILL ARMY REVOLVER, .44 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, Civil War, C.S. Pettengill Army Revolver. These were made for Pettengill by Rogers, Spencer, & Company of Willow Dale, New York. Produced in the early 1860's, this is a 6-shot, .44 caliber, percussion Revolver with a 7-1/2" octagonal barrel. It is a hammerless, double-action design. Only about 3,400 were produced. Of these, 2000 were made under contract for the U.S. Ordnance Department. The 3rd Michigan Cavalry received 500 of these revolvers. Other units that received the Pettengill were the 3rd and 5th Missouri Militia, the 1st Arkansas, the 3rd Illinois, and the 3rd Kentucky. This is a US Martial Pettengill with sub-inspector initials and a faint inspector's cartouche on the left grip. The revolver is in very good condition with an overall gray patina and a sprinkling of very fine pitting in some areas. There is some case color remaining on the loading lever. The mechanism seems to work well, but It is double action only and I don't want to dry fire this rare gun. The bore and chambers are very good. There are a few specks in the barrel, but the rifling is strong and mostly shiny. The grips are in good condition with a liberal scattering of dings and scratches from use. There are a few tiny chips on the edge of the butt. This is a rare and unusual US Military Revolver. Stock no. 32687
