Here is an original, U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol manufactured by Asa Waters of Milbury, Massachusetts in 1840. The Model 1836 was the last U.S. martial handgun to use the flintlock system of ignition. They were made by two contractors, Asa Waters of Milbury, Massachusetts and Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. Waters made 23,000 between 1836 and 1844. This pistol is from the first group of 20,000. The remaining 3000 pistols were all made in 1844. The Model 1836 was the standard handgun of the Mexican War. Converted to percussion, it would serve on into the Civil War. This pistol is in fine condition. The barrel has developed a steel gray patina with a liberal speckling of brown and some fine pitting in places. The iron mountings, ramrod, and swivel have a dark brown patina. The cased colors of the lock and hammer have faded to a dark gray. The trigger retains most of its blued finish. The pistol has excellent mechanics. The bore shows some surface rusting, but not a lot of pitting. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. Two inspector's cartouches are faintly visible on the left flat of the stock. Most of these were converted to percussion for later service. This is a nice untouched example. Stock no. 32685
