Item :	JAPANESE "LAST DITCH" TYPE 99 (SUBSTITUTE) ARISAKA RIFLE, 7.7MM

Description :

This is an original, WWII Japanese Type 99 (substitute) Rifle manufactured at the Hiroshima Plant of Toyo Kogyo near the end of the war and chambered for the 7.7x58mm cartridge. Known as "Last Ditch " rifles, shortages of war materials led to weapons of much cruder quality and simplified design. The rear sight was eliminated and replaced with a simple flat piece of metal with an aperture. The butt plates were made of wood and fastened to the stock with nails. The bolt handles were crudely forged. The cleaning rod was eliminated. The completed rifle was given a rough black finish. This rifle also has the Urushi finish. This is a sumac-based lacquer with a glossy sheen. Many people, thinking that this was a post-war gloss finish, have tried to remove it by sanding or other means. The resulting dust can cause severe skin blistering and rashes. Intact, it is totally safe. This rifle is in very fine condition with matching numbers and the Chrysanthemum National Emblem. It retains more than 90% of its factory black finish. There is some very light wear on the magazine floor plate. The safety knob and bolt handle are turning brown. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The bore is bright and shiny along its length. The stock is in very fine condition with a few small dings and scrapes from use. Nearly all of the Urushi lacquer remains. This is as nice an example of a substitute Type 99 as you are likely to find. Stock no. 32928
