Item :	EXTREMELY RARE, NIPPES MAYNARD PERCUSSION CONVERSION OF M1836 PISTOL

Description :

This is a very rare example of a Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol that has been converted to the percussion system of ignition. It has also been fitted with one of the earliest Maynard percussion tape priming systems. This allowed, in theory, a new cap to be advanced to the percussion cone each time the pistol was cocked, eliminating the need to manually cap the weapon for each shot. In practice it did not work well. This conversion was done by Daniel Nippes of Mill Creek, Pennsylvania. Only a small handful (approximately 5) are known to exist. These might have been prototypes. This pistol is in fine condition with an overall, smooth, dark brown patina. Some areas look like they may have been originally browned. The lock and the Maynard device work perfectly. The bore is brown but mostly smooth. The stock is very good with a few tiny dings from use. It would be very fine, but there is a hairline crack running from the rear of the lock plate up to the barrel tang. It is tight and does not appear to affect the integrity of the stock. This is an extraordinarily rare U.S. Pistol in nice condition. Stock no. 32845
